Charles Richard “Charlie” Dunbar, 71, left his earthly home on the morning of August 18, 2012 with his son and granddaughter by his side. Charles was born on December 19, 1940 to Lyman Leyton and Ada (Barnett) Dunbar. He lived in Winfield all his life. He received his education and graduated from Winfield High in 1959. He was a member of A.A. with 40 years of sobriety and was also a member of First Christian Church.
He married Wilmeta Sweet in 1963 and out of that union they had a son. They later divorced. He married Mary Louise Spencer October 2, 1976 at First Christian Church. They were married 24 years at the time of her passing in August 2000. He suffered a stroke in 2009 and has been in a care home since then. Charles was ornery and loved giving the girls hugs, a hard time and joking with them.
Charles “Charlie” worked 12 years in construction at the Winfield State Hospital and missile silos. He went to Gordon and Piatt to work as a grinder and saw operator. He retired after 30 years in 2000. He and Mary loved to travel and camp. They saw many states such as Michigan, Texas, Colorado, Florida, and Oklahoma just to name a few. He loved going to Nascar, Indy and modified mini stock car races, hot air ballooning, bluegrass festivals, and older music. He especially loved White Fish Pointe and Lake Superior.
Charles is survived by a son Charles L. Dunbar and wife, Sheryl. Grandchildren: Mercedes Dunbar and Mathew Stuckey; Mary’s extended family, cousins and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his dog Little Bits.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 23, 2012 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Union Graham Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 22, 2012. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., that evening.
Memorials have been established in Charles’ name for A.A. and for Medicalodges of Douglass. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
